Some say Colorado or Vermont is America’s Winter Playground, but they must not have heard about Minneapolis. At the Wirth Winter Recreation Area, there is something for everyone. “Explore 700 acres of urban forest and try winter activities including cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, off-road cycling,” snow tubing, sledding and ice fishing.
With 20 miles of cross-country ski trails that connect to five bonus miles of Chain of Lakes trails, you can “ski from Golden Valley to Uptown!” Bring your camera because you’ll want to take photos of the “spectacular views of Downtown Minneapolis to [the] wooded trails overlooking scenic lakes,” says the park’s cross-country skiing webpage.
Yelp reviewers give it high marks for “meticulously maintained” ski trails, ridiculously affordable prices and an excellent beginner cross-country ski class.
If you’re traveling to this region, or even if you live here, there’s no need to buy or bring your own equipment. Rentals are available at reasonable rates. Ice rinks offer free loaner skates, with a variety of quantities and sizes available. Cross-country skis, snowboards and snow tubes are also offered.
After all that activity, you’ll be hungry and thirsty. Head to the Chalet for sandwiches, hot dogs, soups, snacks and beverages. Then use their free wireless Internet to post all the photos you took to your social media. If you forgot your cap and gloves, you can also pick those up inside.
